(D) SLENDER & ELEGANT 18TH C. LOBBED ULA THROWING CLUB

Origin: W. Polynesia, Fiji

Period/Date:  18th C.

Materials:  Vesi wood

Description:  This early example has a beautiful tight head with tired lobes.  It is possibly the oldest one in the group!  The central row of lobes are individually carved and outlined.  Its slender shaft is not linear but slightly meanders and is full of ripples.  Its handgrip has 5.25 inches of worn chip carving.  The club has strong "mana" and was used for generations and thus has some battle marks on it shaft.  Three is a cluster of old chop or hash marks and several are deep enough suggesting the wood was harvested for another purpose.  It has a long history indeed!  A custom stand maybe ordered for an additional fee.
