18TH C. "TUKI" TOTOKIA

Origin:  W. Polynesia, Fiji  (Provenance: Private collection, Michael Auliso- Half Moon Bay.)

Period/Date:  18th century

Materials:   vesi wood, blood, bread fruit sap resin

Description:  I sold this rare and great example many years ago and have the honor to again.  Far less common than a normal totokia, this "tuki" shows generations of use!  Surrounding the striking head I would characterize as a layered blood patina.  Overall an amazing patina and good color on the shaft.   Its carved handgrip is a key feature and miraculously retains a thick band of its original sennit!  In good condition with some loss to the spikes.  Presented on a custom metal display stand.

Dimensions:   Length 38"  (22.5 cm), Width 7.75"  (19.5 cm)
