HEMBA JANUS STAFF TOP

Origin: Dem Republic of Congo, Luba/ Hemba people   (Provenance: Acquired from an old collector in Saint Germain Des Pres Paris )

Period/Date:  likely circa 1960's

Materials: hardwood, stain, lead

Description:  This janus face staff top is presented on a metal base and has a semi-encrusted patina.  Relief-carved faces, female and male with bread.  The bottom section has an old lead-wrapped protective sleeve with embossing.  Some inventory numbers in white paint are located above the sleeve but are no longer legible.
