19TH C. SOUTH AFRICAN ZULU WRAPPED KNOBKERRIE W/ 16 KILL MARKS
Origin: South Africa, Zulu people
Period/Date: At least circa 1900, likely 19th century
Materials: Hardwood, hide/ skin
Description: Here's a very old and intriguing example having a long history of combat. Its shaft is reinforced and wrapped with hide sections. Its owner recorded and tallied his kills by notching the shaft each time one was made. There a total of 16 notched grooves in three different areas which we've concluded are all original! Its head shows obvious evidence of frequent impacts judging by various gouges and somewhat flattened areas. As impressive as its use and age, its rich deep reddish patina is equally amazing. The end of its handle is pierced with a very old linked brass chain for ease of carrying and hanging.
