19TH CENTURY FIJIAN KALI NECKREST

Origin:  W. Polynesia, Fiji

Period/Date:  Likely mid 19th century

Materials:    Bamboo, wood, sennit

Description:  This classic neckrest with bamboo pillow shows long use and skilled construction techniques!  It had two wedge feet, one having a broad rectangular base and the other one tapering to points.   The feet are attached with a marvelous hidden sennit technique which is finished with wooden pegs inserted into the bottom feet which secure the sennit to the bamboo.  A well used example with a varied patina.
