UNIQUE 19TH C. FIJIAN GATA CLUB- OLDMAN COLLECTION

Origin: W. Polynesia, Fiji   (Provenance: Ex. W.O. Oldman Collection, Ex. Christensen Fund collection.  Ex. Sotheby's Sydney 1996. )

Period/Date:  likely 1st quarter of the 19th century

Materials:     vesi ironwood

Description:  This heavy "gata" club with handsome color features a unique swollen hump at the base of its striking head! This special element added to its effective surface area to impact.  The acute texture and rippling in wood of head region is impressive.    The top of its head is well-formed with a sloped ridge and high relief-carved rib.  Along there in tiny white collection numbers are those of Christensen cc60014.  This example, together with one other from the Oldman collection, was sold at Sotheby's Sydney in 1996.   The flare at the base of the neck, makes it a cut above most, and the desirable provenance make it all the better.   In good condition with some hairline separations in the wood.  A custom stand may be ordered for an additional fee.
