LARGE ELLIPTICAL 19TH C. FIJIAN FOOD PLATTER DISH

Origin:  W. Polynesia, Fiji    (Provenance: Ex. Norman Hurst, Cambridge Massachusetts)

Period/Date:  Likely early to mid 19th Century

Materials:       Vesi Hardwood

Description:  I've owned many Kava bowls and dishes but never one of this beautiful type!  This elegant and food dish is called a "Sedreniyaqona".  A related example can be seen in Yalo i Viti by Clunie on page 95, figure 143.  On the wood grain you can see areas that look like stone tool marks and stone polishing, especially underneath.  There are 3 white X's marked on the bottom-- possibly a collection designation?  In excellent condition with no chips or loss.
