ATLAS MOUNTAINS BERBER WOVEN CONICAL COIL HAT W/ GLASS BEADS
Origin: Algeria, Atlas Mountains, Berber people, Lmilchil Village, Ait Haddidu tribe or related group
Period/Date: At least Mid 20th century
Materials: Fiber, Cobalt blue glass trade beads
Description: This classic hat features tightly woven coil construction and is in good condition. I'm told this version is a "birthing hat". The women worn it covered with fabric and adornment. What makes it possibly unique is how it looks ordinary from the outside, but the owner concealed their glass trade bead wealth to the interior from view. Each beautiful cobalt blue bead is hand sewn in place! The disk-like beads are all handmade and vary in the size, both in overall diameter and interior hole diameter, but average about 1 cm. They could easily date to the 19th century? They are hard to count but there are about 40 of them in total. They were obviously important and valuable enough for the owner to conceal them from view and to keep close at all times. The hat shows modest wear and use with some minor soiling under the rim. Display stand not included.
