19TH C. FIJIAN/ TONGAN BOAWI CLUB, RARE TYPE

Origin:  W. Polynesia, Fiji  (Provenance: )

Period/Date:  Mid 19th century

Materials:  Vesi Hardwood

Description:  The scale of this "bowai" club would be considered dainty, but that's what makes it special!  I recall reading in the literature that this size club was used by individuals of high status to discipline concubines when necessary.  Its elegant handgrip features impressive broad geometric decoration!  Note that in the field of carving is a vertical raised line with horizontal hash marks, which may have meaning or significance?  The color of the club in person is virtually "jet black" until you blast it with photography lights.   A custom stand maybe ordered for a fee.
